BECOMING Series
A group of works reflecting on matter’s constant state of becoming through growth and decay, beginnings and endings. Becoming – corpus, borders, and Frantic Beauty were presented here at BAM Fisher in 2013, 2016, and 2017. At the root of these works are questions of being: Who are we? What are we becoming? How do we become? Why do we become?
“The video projections are Mr. Moriya’s bailiwick and his control is remarkable. He can make solid flesh appear to melt. ” – Brian Seibert, The New York Times, on BECOMING – corpus” (2013)
“One could describe this incomparable event as an exploration of dance; however, the 75-minute performance engages the viewer in unique ways, activating all the visual, aural, olfactory, and touch sensibilities.” – Jane Chin Davidson, HYPERALLERGIC, on Frantic Beauty (2017)
“Through the mixture of voices, sounds, light textures, and choreography of high physicality, “Borders” seeks to shrink the gap between space and time in order to expose the ambivalence in the way borders are created, perceived, traversed, and dismantled…“Becomings,” thus, offers a critical choreographed space for the willful quietness and slowness to stress the importance of bending bodies and histories; to reinforce the importance of politicizing and archiving the history of the bodies that resist, bodies that slowdown, complicate, decrease production, increase revolt.” – Nadia Zukic, Text and Performance Quarterly on “borders” (2016) and “BECOMINGS” Series
