Avalanche is a performance for two dancers, performed by Julian Grubman and Andrea Soto. Using the phases of a natural avalanche, the work investigates humans’ instincts, psyche, search and loss of control preceding imminent disasters.

Andrea Soto was raised in the U.S.-Mexico border, Juarez. Her craft spans over immersive dance, performance art, and physical theater. Her works are inspired by our internal anatomy: our entanglement with place, culture, memory and the non-human world. Through character development and embodied research, Andrea reimagines systems that disrupt isolating borders as a practice of refusal to the ridicule of self-examination. She studied at California Institute of the Arts, and trained in Paris, Brussels and London. She has held residencies with London Performance Space, LEIMAY, and New Dance Alliance, and is honored to be the recipient of the Barbara Ensley Award on behalf of the Merce Cunningham Trust. She continues to work as a dancer and director across Los Angeles, New York and London.

 

Julian Grubman (he/they) is a Los Angeles-born dancer who began his training at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, performing works by José Limón, Jiří Kylián, and Rami Beer. He continued his studies at SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Dance, specializing in Composition under the direction of Nelly Van-Bommel and Doug Varone. After graduating, he performed in Annie Rigney’s “…she was becoming untethered” at 92NY before returning to Los Angeles, where he joined Volta Collective under Mamie Green. Now based in New York, Julian continues his career as a freelance artist.
