In Illo Tempore

An Installation by CAVEnsemble

CAVEnsemble

“Who is he? An exile. It is an endless paradox: looking forward by always looking back. He hangs there, frozen in time….”

-Salman Rushdie

Bodies hang on the walls, bodies that foretell their own absence, suspended in time, petrified; an eternal night, exploring, from the silence of mummies, the voice of the exile. Mummies vacillate between life and death. They tell us of their impossible return, of their eternal journey, one without rest. The installation-performance was 45 minutes in length. During the time the (45’ x 20’) gallery was open to the public, and a video of the performance was projected onto the empty canvases. The opposite gallery wall displayed life-sized black-and-white photos of a close-up of each person hanging in the original installation. The performance was offered twice a week for one month. The original/ live performance was the opening event of the second New York Butoh Festival.
