Bodies on the Brink: Encounters with LEIMAY

by Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya with the LEIMAY Ensemble and guest artists

LEIMAY

AT HOME 2026

A work-in-progress iteration of Bodies on the Brink, a sculptural performance in which the LEIMAY Ensemble, Masanori Asahara, Krystel Mazzeo and Akane Little, navigate kinetic wooden sculptures that translate weight and friction into sound. This showing marks the first time composers Jeremy D. Slater and yuniya edi kwon join the process in real time, expanding the sonic field beyond the embedded microphones inside the sculptures.

As the performers recalibrate atop shifting forms, balance becomes audible. Wood, latex, muscle, and vibration enter into relation. The composers introduce layered tonal environments that move between contact resonance, sustained atmospheric fields, voice, and violin.

After Sunday’s performance, we held an Open Conversation with the artistic co-directors, the LEIMAY Ensemble, and the guest artists about the artistic process of Bodies on the Brink.

This event also included a LUDUS Masterclass led by LEIMAY’s co-artistic director, Ximena Garnica on Tuesday, May 26th.
